Checking in - Art and Fashion
The Comms Group checked in with Art and Fashion to see what they've been working on and how the Project is progressing so far. We wanted to get a better idea of their creative processes, challenges and how their ideas are starting to come together.
Art Group
When we spoke to the Art Group, they explained that this week they were mainly focusing on developing the visual design and experimenting with different materials for their display. One of the students said they had been “testing different textures and colours to see what actually works together instead of just what looks good in our sketches”. They also mentioned that they had started building small prototypes as part of their display so they could see how it would look in real life.
When we asked what the hardest part had been so far, one student laughed and said, “honestly, agreeing on one idea. Everyone has good ideas so it’s kind of hard choosing which direction to go in”. Another complication they mentioned was time management and making sure the materials they wanted to use were available.
We also asked the Art Group what inspired their ideas for the Project. One student explained that they had been looking at different exhibits from the Australian Museum for inspiration and trying to think about how visitors interact with displays. “We don’t just want it to look cool, we want people to actually stop and look at it,” they said.
Fashion
The Fashion Group told us they had been working on their techniques and designs this week, as well as starting to test fabrics for their prototype pieces. One student said they were currently creating a rough version of one of their designs so they could see how it fits and moves. “It’s not the final version, but it helps us figure out what needs to change”, they explained.
When we asked if they faced any problems, they said one of the main complications was choosing the right fabric and making sure the design was possible to create. “Sometimes it looks really good on paper but then when you try to make it, it’s way harder than expected”, one student said.
Another question we asked both groups was how they have been working together as a team. The fashion group said communication has been really important, especially when dividing up different tasks. “Some people are better at drawing, some at sewing, some are better at design, so we try to use everyone’s strengths”, one student explained.
Looking Forward
Overall, both the Art and Fashion teams seem to be making strong progress on their projects. Even though there have been a few complications along the way, both groups are working through challenges and continuing to develop their prototypes and ideas. It will be exciting to see how their work evolves over the next few weeks as the project continues
