A vibrant tribute to the park's journey from the 1930s to the future, the painting team reflects on collective experiences through historic archives of photographs, artworks, and memorabilia, creating a journey through the past, present, and envisioning the future.
Each panel captures a distinct era, reflecting the collective experiences through historic archives, photographs, artworks, and memorabilia. The mural begins with the golden era of the 1930s-40s, showcasing the park's playful charm and social frivolity through scenes of couples and friends enjoying rides like the Big Dipper and River Caves. Painted in tonal greys, yellows, and blacks, it echoes vintage posters and celebrates youthful adventure.
The subsequent panels continue this journey, highlighting the park's evolution through the decades. The 1950s-60s panel evokes the heat and theatrical energy of Coney Island's Mirror Maze and whimsical performances, while the 1970s-80s panel reimagines the park's vibrant era, marked by artistic advocacy following the Ghost train fire. The 1990s-2000s panel explores Luna Park's revival, symbolized by the reimagined entry face and playful scenes of renewal. The final panels envision the park's future, blending historical significance with contemporary charm and futuristic experiences envisioned by students. Together, these panels create a dreamlike vision of Luna Park's enduring magic and its place in public memory.

We engaged with the spirit and history of Luna Park over the last ninety years and created a mix of music styles to forge a connection to this timescape. Creativity and artistic openness unearthed a range of collaborative endeavours enabling Music to support other teams such as Film, Dance, and Art. Working across the dual disciplines of composition and live performance we were inspired to channel the power and emotion of music to express the amazing legacy that Luna Park has offered to fun-seeking visitors over the decades. Music composition ideas were workshopped to refine and capture the essence and excitement of ninety years of Luna Park with students delving into music from the birth of Luna Park to the present. In live performance students rehearsed and developed repertoire to entertain guests on the Luna Park event day and transport them through the Luna Park journey over the last ninety years. Happy 90th Birthday Luna Park! 🎂🎶
Thank you to students from Year 12, and the Bradfield graduate community, who contributed so generously to this year’s project.

Verbatim theatre is a form of documentary theatre in which the play’s script is edited together from the exact words spoken by people interviewed about a particular event or topic. This piece is all about the history of experiences at Luna Park and tells the stories of a range of characters. Our play explores different perspectives across a variety of ages, including Milsons Point Retirement Village residents. We gathered a range of unique stories and memories and recorded these in the sound studio. The end result was a verbatim radio play spanning nine decades of the meaningful ways Luna Park has impacted the lives of Sydneysiders.
This aspect of the project was worked on by the Performance students, and was recorded in the Bradfield Radio Room.
Dream Ride, the immersive installation film created as part of our SMILE project in honour of Luna Park's 90th Birthday, can now be viewed on Bradfield's Youtube channel.
This film brings together art, drawing, 2D animation, 3D animation, dance, performance, cinematography, editing, photography and music. The film journeys through the history and iconic rides of Luna Park, including the Ferris Wheel, Coney Island and Big Dipper, using each as the inspiration for a film.
Dream Ride will be showcased Luna Park Sydney on Luna Park's 90th Birthday - October 4th, 2025.
