Welcome to Playground of the Unexpected.
As we emerge from a distorted wonderland of expansion and contraction, it’s time to tread softly and dream big. Curiosity, energy and optimism are the drivers for community storytelling in film, photography, art, design, dance, music and drama – as seen through the eyes of young creatives at Bradfield College.
Find out how play allows for happy accidents and unanticipated delights. You’re invited to stop and play, then glimpse how our emerging creative talents approach our city and this ‘new normal’ by embracing the unexpected.
Playground of the Unexpected is the culmination of a creative approach to senior secondary education. For 16 weeks Bradfield year 11 students have worked in teams to stage the exhibition. It’s about providing a workplace experience in the creative industries so that student can build a skills passport made up of practical, technical, and transferrable skills to prepare them for future work and study options.
In June 2022, Bradfield Senior College staged 'Playground of the Unexpected' as part of Vivid 2022.
The evening of Project is always a highlight of the College calendar. Live music plays in the Courtyard, with market stalls lining the walls, while key spaces (the Gallery, the Theatre, the Dance Studio, the Foyer) are given over to hosting exhibits.
This video showcases a song by Alessia and Indigo that was performed several times throughout the evening. As B-roll, a number of other exhibits are featured, including 'Cabinet of Curiosities', 'Not for Style's Sake', 'Under the Sea' and 'The Doll's House'.
This montage distills the 'Under the Sea' experience from the Project 2022 presentation on 2nd June 2022. 'Under the Sea' was part of Playground of the Unexpected, and included three acts within it - Bridge, Diving In and Aquatic Life.
Bridge - Maddie, Neila, Max, Tobie
The entrance of Under the Harbour is based around the iconic face of Luna Park Sydney. Luna Park is one of the most popular playground attractions in Sydney and allows the audience to be drawn into the bright and famous entrance of the Harbour Bridge. The audience will experience a journey through Sydney’s classic sights, including silhouettes representing the stories of sunken ships in Sydney Harbour.
Diving In - Caleb, Monica, Gabe, Chris
An optical illusion pattern leads the audience to the door into Aquatic Life. It will include blue curved cardboard strips spiralling towards the entrance to create a portal effect. There will be a projector facing the door and a video will be projected and it will be played on loop to entice the audience into entering the depths of this underwater world. As the audience witnesses a girl, with image projection of the ocean, falling into the depths they themselves are transported into a watery wonderland.
Aquatic Life - Hugo, Caine, Ash, Eli
This immersive theatrical experience discovers endangered species in Sydney Harbour. The use of puppetry embodies sea life and their dying habitat. Through investigation of movement and characteristics of species, performers bring the creatures to life. By using recycled materials, the puppets represent how society can recycle waste and make it into something beautiful. The immersive experience showcases a variety of action sequences, dynamic movements performed with music. The story educates audiences about preservation of our precious harbour.
The Project is delivered in tandem with the Certificate II in Workplace Skills.
